A high school football game in Michigan took a shocking and frightening turn when 15-year-old Colton Mims suffered a severe injury after being crushed under the full weight of a much larger opposing player during a junior varsity match. The game, which was played between Lakeshore High School and Kalamazoo Central High School, quickly became the center of attention after the brutal “pancake” tackle was caught on video and circulated widely online. The incident left Colton and his family in a state of disbelief and concern, as well as the entire local community rallying around the injured teen.
The footage shows the larger Lakeshore player tackling Colton with intense force and then landing on him twice, an action that stunned spectators and brought the crowd to gasps of horror. The severity of the hit immediately became apparent as Colton was carried off the field by teammates and medical personnel. His mother, Courtney Mims, who recorded the video herself, shared her emotional reaction with WSBT, stating, “As soon as it clicked that it was my son, I couldn’t be stopped. I had to go down there.” She described the experience as unlike anything she had ever felt before, explaining, “I’ve never been as upset or shaken up as I was over something for my son.”
Following the incident, Colton was rushed to the hospital, where doctors conducted thorough examinations and confirmed that he had suffered two fractures in his spine. These injuries have left him sidelined for the remainder of the football season, with his long-term playing future uncertain. Colton was prescribed muscle relaxers and is under close medical supervision as doctors continue to assess his recovery and the potential risks of returning to contact sports.
Courtney Mims expressed her heartbreak over the situation, emphasizing the importance of football to her son and many teenagers like him. “He’s out at least for this season. We don’t know if he’s going to be able to play again,” she said. “These boys are high school boys. They’re 15 years old. The game means a lot to them. It’s their whole life right now.” She called the dangerous nature of the tackle “unacceptable” and expressed fear over the potential consequences. “My kid could have been paralyzed easily. He can barely walk right now and I don’t know if he can ever play football again. It’s his whole life right now and it’s just sad,” Courtney told MLive.
The tackle was described by Courtney’s friend, Gretta Volkenstein, who was the first to share the video on social media, as a purposeful and impulsive act by the opposing player. Volkenstein told MLive, “It was so purposeful and impulsive by a kid, which is awful.” She called the incident a “split-second decision that can change somebody’s whole life.” Volkenstein urged for accountability and for teaching young athletes to handle situations responsibly, saying, “This is our time to say things that even when they are uncomfortable and teach the kids the right way to handle this and communicate. People have to be held accountable for their actions.”
The local community has shown overwhelming support for Colton since the incident. In a gesture of solidarity, Kalamazoo Central’s varsity football team dedicated their next day’s 26-7 victory to him. A Facebook post celebrating the win read simply, “The win was for Colton,” reflecting how deeply the incident had affected players and fans alike.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) has confirmed it is aware of the incident and stated that it is being handled internally. “We are aware of the situation you’re describing. We’ve talked to both schools, and they are resolving this issue internally,” a spokesperson said. Meanwhile, Lakeshore school officials have remained tight-lipped on specifics, saying only, “We can’t share any information at this time, other than that we are working with the other school about this situation.”
Social media users have reacted strongly, with many expressing anger and demanding consequences for the player responsible. One commenter wrote, “The offending player should be suspended from school, prosecuted, and the coach or coaches should be permanently suspended for suggesting and encouraging such action.” Another user compared the tackle to a criminal attack, saying, “How could punishment for the pancaking player be unclear? That was a criminal attack that would even be punished in the NFL.”
As Colton embarks on what is expected to be a long and challenging recovery, his mother hopes the incident raises awareness about the dangers of unsafe and reckless plays in youth sports. She warns that even years down the line, any accident or slip could have lifelong, devastating consequences due to the severity of the spinal injuries he sustained. “Colton will likely need to get back X-rays and checkups for many years. Any kind of accident, even a slip and fall years from now, could result in lifelong paralysis,” Courtney cautioned.
Calls for justice and immediate action from the schools and law enforcement have continued to mount. One social media user wrote, “The school and the police need to take immediate action regarding the brute who purposely pancaked him.”
On Monday, it was announced that the player from Kalamazoo Central High School responsible for the tackle would face disciplinary action. Although the exact nature of the punishment has not been disclosed by either school district, Courtney Mims shared that the player will miss several games. This development marks a step toward accountability but also leaves open many questions about the broader implications for sports safety and player conduct in high school athletics.
