Meryl Streep, a popular and iconic actress, made a notable appearance at the 76th Emmys. Known for her remarkable acting abilities, Streep received a nomination in the ‘Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series’ category for her role in “Only Murders in the Building.”
During the ceremony, Kaitlin Olson and Rob McElhenney, co-stars of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and real-life couple, walked the stage to present the prize in Streep’s category.
While presenting the prize, the husband-and-wife combo cracked a joke that has elicited conflicting reactions online.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we are here to honor the comedic performances that hold everything in place,” she said. “They provide essential assistance when it’s truly required.” Olson said, “Much like a jockstrap.” What you were describing sounded quite similar to a jockstrap.”
In answer, McElhenney hesitates and says, “No, it does not! These functions ensure that everything remains safe. Without this help, the entire product comes apart. Indeed, this does sound like a jockstrap.
The audience bursts out laughing as Olson asks, “Are you calling Meryl Streep a jockstrap?” McElhenney swiftly responds, “No!” I’m so sorry, Meryl.”
The camera then shifts to Meryl Streep, who is visibly shocked by the resemblance. She glances down and utters, “Oh, God.” This moment has ignited a heated internet discussion.
Opinions differ on whether Streep misinterpreted the joke or was in on it.
One fan tweeted, “I’m not sure who scripted the #EmmyAwards tonight, but the banter is so awful. They just compared Meryl Streep to a jockstrap.” Yes, it is that bad.”
