My In-Laws Tried to Hijack My Wedding — But I Took Back Control
When I found out Richard’s family had canceled my dress, cake, and even our venue, I felt powerless — until my best friend reminded me I didn’t have to let them win.
Richard’s family never truly accepted me. They dominated every gathering with inside jokes, while I remained the outsider. His mother, Margaret, and sister, Sophie, dismissed me constantly, even insisting they should “plan our wedding” because they knew better.
Despite saving for years to have full control, they secretly canceled every booking — even my dress — replacing it with their country club choices. Heartbroken, I nearly gave up until my best friend Lila said, “Plan your own wedding again — just don’t tell them.”
So, Richard and I did exactly that. We rebooked our vendors, sent electronic invitations, and excluded his family. On our big day, we celebrated at the cabin we loved while they waited at the country club.
When they later confronted us, Richard stood firm: “Olive is my wife, my family. Respect our choices or lose us.”
That day proved one thing: our marriage would be built on our terms, not theirs.
