Being a single mom isn’t easy. Every dollar counts, and every decision is made with my six-year-old son, Leo, in mind.
That’s why, last Saturday, when an **elderly homeless woman** approached me in the Walmart parking lot, I hesitated.
Her coat was **tattered,** her hair **wild,** her hands **covered in grime.** But her **eyes… her eyes were kind.**
*”Please,”* she said, voice trembling. *”Can you drive me to St. Mary’s Church? I need to get there.”*
It was a **20-minute** drive. **Gas wasn’t cheap.** But when I saw the tears welling up in her eyes, something inside me **cracked.**
*”Alright, get in,”* I sighed.
During the ride, she **kept thanking me,** over and over. I assured her it was *no big deal.*
As we dropped her off, Leo grinned. *”Mom, you did the right thing. I’m glad I have such a kind mommy.”*
That alone made it **worth it.**
I figured that was the end of it.
### **The Knock at the Door**
Three days later. **7 p.m.**
A sharp knock startled me.
I opened the door and **gasped.**
It was **her.**
But **she wasn’t the same.**
Her face was **clean.** Her hair **neatly styled.** And she wore a **lavish Gucci coat,** the kind I’d only seen in **magazines.**
I stammered, *”What… what’s going on?”*
She smiled warmly and stepped forward.
*”You gave me something that day, my dear,”* she said. *”Not just a ride. Kindness. And that kindness has a way of coming back around.”*
Then, she **handed me an envelope.**
I stared at it, confused.
*”Open it,”* she urged.
My fingers trembled as I tore it open. **Inside was a check for $50,000.**
I nearly **collapsed.**
*”W-what? Why?”* I whispered.
She chuckled. *”You assumed I was homeless. But I was… testing something. Seeing if there were still good people in this world. And you, my dear, are one of them.”*
Tears blurred my vision.
*”Use it well,”* she said. *”And tell that sweet boy of yours—his mommy really is as kind as he thinks.”*
And just like that, she **walked away.**
Leaving me standing in the doorway, heart pounding, realizing that **one act of kindness had just changed our lives forever.**
