Mom who used her dead son’s sperm to have his child shares update 3 years later

Ana Obregón, 71, drew widespread attention when she used her deceased son’s sperm to have his child after he died from cancer. Now, three years later, she has shared an update.

The former actress sparked global debate when she honored her late son Aless Lequio’s wishes by using his frozen sperm to conceive a child via surrogacy after he lost his battle with cancer. In 2023, she welcomed her granddaughter, Anita Sandra.

“The girl isn’t my daughter, she’s my granddaughter. It was Aless’ last wish to bring a child into the world,” Obregón told ¡Hola! magazine after Anita was born.

The baby was conceived using an egg donor, and since surrogacy is not legal in Spain, the procedure was carried out in the United States.

In an interview with the Daily Mail last year, she said: “We live our whole lives saying that we are eternal and nothing happens here. Suddenly, one day they tell you at 25 years old that you have an aggressive cancer,” according to UNILAD.

Naturally, the story drew significant international attention. While some criticized the decision, others praised Obregón for fulfilling her son’s final wish.

“Love is the greatest force that exists”

Since Anita’s birth, Obregón has largely focused on raising her granddaughter. In a social media post shared on Anita’s birthday, she shared a heartfelt update.

“3 years ago today you were born. Three years ago today I came back to life by hugging you for the first time. Because in doing so, I also hugged a piece of your daddy.

“You’ve filled my dark world and my hell with lights, smiles, rubs, hugs, diapers, pacifiers and toys all over the house. You are good, smart, sensitive, and you have the same sense of humor as your Father.”

She continued: “One day I will tell you why you are here, I will tell you about the bravery of your Dad and the life lesson he gave us all. I’ll tell you how much I dreamed of hugging you, caring for you and loving you even though now he does it from heaven. I pray to God that you have good health and are happy for many more years. Always together the three of us.”

She recently also shared a photo of Anita in a Superman costume alongside an old childhood picture of Aless, but chose to cover the young girl’s face.

“I am lucky enough to love my two super heroes with all my soul,” she wrote.
