‘Never-before-seen’ footage shows attempts to rescue caver who died ‘worst death imaginable’

John Edward Jones died in one of the most traumatic and horrifying cave accidents in history. Now, a new documentary reveals never-before-seen footage of the rescue mission, which paints an even more heartbreaking picture.

In November 2009, 26-year-old John Edward Jones died one of the worst deaths imaginable. A medical student at the time, a husband and father, John had found a passion for exploring narrow, deep passages through caves.

However, what started as a normal adventure in Utah’s Nutty Putty Cave would become his last. His final moments unfolded in a way that left the entire world horrified, and the caving community changed forever.

What John Edward Jones thought was a familiar route led into a passage no one had ever mapped out. A space, just 10 inches high and 18 inches wide, became his death. The space was suffocatingly tight, and before John could do anything, he was stuck. He was wedged headfirst, unable to move or turn around.

The 26-year-old panicked. With him was his brother, Josh, who desperately tried to help him. However, nothing worked, and Josh realized the situation was becoming very serious. He turned around, raced back through the cave before reaching the surface, and called for help.

What followed was a massive rescue effort. Rescuers worked day and night for 27 hours, trying everything they could to rescue John. However, nothing helped. Not only was the space too tight to help him, but as he was lying head-down, blood rushed to his head.

The horrifying John Edward Jones cave accident

John Edward Jones’ heart struggled; he had problems breathing, and time was running out. Ultimately, rescuers had to decide that no one could help the husband and father. He was trapped and would never see the light of day again.

Brandon Kowallis, a caver and YouTuber who took part in the rescue mission together with various others, recalled how John lost and regained consciousness several times.

The man’s breathing grew more and more shallow, and KOwallis recalled John’s heartbreaking final moments. Rescuers brought him a radio so he could speak with his loved ones.

“I think it was his father, mother, and wife who spoke to him,” the caver recalled. “They told him they loved him and were praying for him. His father gave him a blessing. His wife mentioned a feeling of peace, that everything would be OK.”

John Edward Jones died in the cave, and authorities decided to close it to the public so a similar harrowing incident would never happen again. John was honored with a plaque and a wreath at the cave’s entrance.

Never-before-seen pictures released in new documentary

A chilling new documentary uploaded to the YouTube channel EWU Unsolved has brought fresh attention to the tragic death of John, and it’s leaving viewers deeply shaken.

For the first time, never-before-seen footage from inside the cave has been released, offering a haunting glimpse into the desperate rescue attempt. The video shows rescuers working without a break, surrounded by ropes and equipment, as they discuss every possible way to save him.

Rescuers can be heard weighing their options, but in the end, the operation is simply too dangerous and complex. Despite their determination, they ultimately reach a heartbreaking conclusion.

At one point, crews even try to chip away at the rocks at the cave walls in a last-ditch effort to widen the narrow passage. But progress is painfully slow, and hope begins to fade.

In the final moments of the rescue attempt, Jones can be seen making small movements with his feet, a sign he was still alive, fighting. But tragically, the movements soon stop.

One last rescue mission

The documentary also includes detailed diagrams showing how John Jones became trapped in the narrow, birth canal-like passage — and the explanation is as heartbreaking as it is shocking.

With every breath he took, his chest expanded, pushing him even tighter into the unforgiving space and making escape nearly impossible.

In one final, desperate attempt to save him, rescuers tried to pull Jones free using a rope and “pulley system.” However, tragedy struck, and the last hope failed as the system failed. It caused John to slip even deeper into the cave than before.
