Unaware of the frantic shouts coming from the beach, registered nurse Christopher Carroll, who is from Spanish Fork, Utah, ran into the water in an effort to help her and bring her back to safety.
Tragically, even with his heroic efforts and the urgent response that followed, Arlene later died in the hospital due to the injuries she suffered.

“My second clue should have been that nobody was in the water.”

Even so, the power of a single bite can be overwhelming. An exploratory bite alone can cause severe, life-altering, and sometimes fatal injuries.
This overlap increases the chance of encounters, unlike deep-ocean species such as Oceanic White Tip sharks and Blue sharks. Even so, those species have also been involved in fatal attacks in rare cases.
