Karl was heading to Spain, Ben to college in New York, Todd planned to go to Mexico, and only Willie was staying in L.A. They exchanged addresses and phone numbers, but Willie wanted something more—a promise that they would all return to the same beach on the same day, 40 years later. As the years passed, the four friends each followed very different paths. Willie built a successful IT company in Silicon Valley, Todd became an experienced sailor before taking over his father’s bait shop, and Ben achieved fame as a leading lawyer. They arrived at Karl’s modest, nearly deserted home. He opened the door with the help of a crutch, appearing frail and aged beyond his years. Overwhelmed with emotion, they embraced him.
