Houston Mayor Accused Of ‘Gaslighting’ City After 16th Body Found In Same Bayous Amid Serial Killer Fears

Residents in Houston are growing increasingly alarmed after yet another body was pulled from one of the city’s bayous, marking the 16th death this year. The unsettling pattern has led some to believe a serial killer could be behind it, while city officials continue to insist otherwise.

Authorities have reported 16 drownings across Harris County in 2024 alone, most of them discovered in similar conditions, and many families of the victims are demanding answers. What some consider a tragic coincidence, others view as something far more sinister.

Mayor John Whitmire has publicly rejected claims of a killer on the loose, saying earlier this month: “We do not have any evidence that there is a serial killer loose in Houston, Texas.”

The mayor has attributed the deaths to a combination of drug use, alcohol, and homelessness, insisting these incidents are not part of any criminal pattern. In his words, the drownings are “not a new phenomenon” and have been seen in the area for years.

“Unfortunately the homeless, when they pass, often end up in the bayou.” he said during a recent press briefing, urging residents not to panic.

However, some families say his comments feel dismissive. Among them is Lauren Freeman, whose cousin, Kenneth Cutting Jr., was one of the victims. She accused the mayor of ‘gaslighting’ the city by brushing off growing concerns instead of addressing what she believes is a serious pattern of deaths.

Kenneth’s father, Kenneth Cutting Sr., expressed his frustration in an interview with Fox News Digital, saying: “All them people didn’t commit suicide or fall into the bayou accidentally and drown. It’s ridiculous.”

He continued, emphasizing how many similar deaths have occurred recently: “There’s been so many of ’em in the last three years.”

According to reports, Kenneth Jr. disappeared after a night out in Houston back in June. His body was recovered from the bayou a few days later, not far from where he was last seen. Investigators conducted an autopsy, which found no visible injuries or drugs in his system, deepening the mystery around his death.

His father remains convinced that something more sinister happened to his son, telling Fox News Digital: “Something happened to my son. My son didn’t fall into the bayou and drown.”

Lauren Freeman echoed those fears, saying: “Either there’s a serial killer on the loose, or the scum of society have realized they can start dumping bodies in the bayou in the midst of the heat and they start decomposing so nobody gets caught. You just can’t stab them or shoot them.”

She’s not alone. Another victim, 27-year-old Anthony Curry, was also pulled from a Houston bayou earlier this year. Officials ruled his death an accidental drowning, though toxicology tests found PCP and alcohol in his system. Still, Curry’s family has questioned that conclusion, insisting he wouldn’t have willingly gone near the water.

His sister, Alexis Curry, told Click 2 Houston: “That ain’t my brother. He’ll go somewhere and chill off before he just go jump in some water.”

Alexis described her brother as her “superhero” and said his loss has left a hole in their family that nothing can fill. She remains baffled by the official account of his death, saying that none of it adds up.

“I really want to know what happened,” she said, her voice breaking as she called for more transparency from investigators.
