Police said the alleged crime happened shortly after 7AM local time near Edwin and Brombach in Detroit on Monday, April 13, while the girl was standing outside waiting for the bus to school. What should have been a normal morning quickly turned into a serious emergency.
About 30 minutes later, the suspect, who police said did not know the teenager, brought the girl into a Sunoco gas station and bought cigarettes. He then told the girl to pay for them, which was the moment things started to become clear to the clerk behind the counter.
He told WXYZ: “When he ask her to pay for the cigarettes, I stop and go there’s something wrong. And she mouthed talked to me, like with no sound, ‘help’.”
Instead of ignoring that feeling, Abohatem trusted his instincts. He stepped out from behind the protective glass, confronted the man, and moved the teenager into a safer position inside the store.
Police also said other students had seen the kidnapping happen and helped officers by working to track the girl’s location through her phone. That extra help gave police a faster way to narrow down where she had been taken.
Because of that, officers were able to reach the gas station in time and arrest the alleged kidnapper before he could leave the scene. What might have turned into a much longer search instead ended very quickly.
How the rescue came together so quickly
The rescue appears to have come down to a series of fast decisions by several people at once. The clerk noticed the warning signs, the girl found a way to quietly ask for help, and other students helped police trace her location.
That combination mattered. In cases like this, even a short delay can give a suspect time to move somewhere else, which makes finding a victim much harder.
Here, the response was immediate. Once the clerk acted and police were alerted to the location, the situation shifted from a hidden threat to an active rescue in progress.
“I see the police outside. I point to him — ‘That’s the guy’,” Abohatem recalled.
Police said the suspect has a history of rape charges, which added even more concern to the case after the arrest was made.
In a separate statement shared with ABC News, the Hamtramck Police Department said: “The suspect is still in custody and charges are pending with the Wayne County Prosecutors Office.”
The teenager’s family later told WXYZ that she was safely back home after the incident. They also said she was grateful for the support and help she received from people in the community.
“As we show the police the location, informed the dispatch, and as she walked in and said she had the location, like the whole room froze and we all look at each other like, ‘Here we go’.”
His comments showed how much urgency there was in the room once the girl’s location became visible. From that point on, everyone involved seemed to understand that they had only a small window to help bring her back safely.
Why the clerk’s actions mattered
Abohatem’s response stood out because he did not wait for the situation to become more obvious. The teenager could not openly call for help, so her silent signal was the only warning he had in that moment.
That meant he had to make a judgment call right away. By stepping in, putting the girl behind him, and pointing out the suspect to police, he helped create the opening officers needed to take control of the scene.
The case is also a reminder that victims do not always get the chance to speak clearly when they are in danger. Sometimes a look, a gesture, or a mouthed word is all another person has to go on.
Community support helped end the incident
The girl’s rescue was not the result of just one person acting alone. The clerk, the responding officers, the students who saw what happened, and the school staff all played a part in helping the situation come to an end.
That shared effort appears to have made a major difference in how fast the case moved. Once the location was traced and police knew where to go, they were able to respond before the suspect had another chance to move the girl somewhere else.
By the end of it, the teenager was home safe, the suspect was in custody, and the focus turned to the charges and the investigation. But the clearest part of the story was how quickly people around her acted when they realized she needed help.
