Former Miss Switzerland found murdered in horrific way

The trial of a Swiss man, who is accused of murdering and dismembering his wife, former Miss Switzerland finalist Kristina Joksimovic, is set to commence this week, more than two years after her remains were found in the family home.

Keep reading to find out all the details.

Marc Rieben has been charged regarding the death of his late wife, Kristina Joksimovic, 38, who was killed in February 2024 at their home in Binningen, a town close to Basel.

This case has shocked Switzerland, not only due to the horrific allegations but also because of the unsettling details that prosecutors say came to light during the investigation.

Rieben has reportedly asserted that he acted in self-defense; however, prosecutors vehemently contest that account of events.

Investigators suggest that the killing occurred amid rising tensions related to the couple’s separation.

Rieben, who is set to go on trial in Muttenz for about five and a half days, is accused of assaulting Joksimovic during what prosecutors have characterized as a “violent rage.”

Reports from the Mirror indicate that the couple had been embroiled in disputes over the custody of their two daughters, with prosecutors claiming Rieben sought full-time custody while refusing to provide financial support during the separation.

Authorities claim he seized Joksimovic by the throat, forced her against a wall, and strangled her with what investigators referred to as a “ribbon-like object.”

What prosecutors allege occurred next is the most chilling aspect of the case.

As per investigators, Rieben supposedly utilized garden shears, a knife, and a jigsaw to dismember Joksimovic’s body in the laundry room of the house.

Prosecutors also assert that some of her remains were blended in a kitchen appliance.

Investigators later characterized these actions as a “deliberate mutilation or ritualized degradation of the body.”

Local news reports additionally suggested that YouTube videos were playing during the alleged dismemberment. The forensic evidence reportedly contradicted Rieben’s claim of self-defense, which stated he killed Joksimovic after she attacked him with a knife.

According to investigators, the autopsy revealed what they termed the “methodical and prolonged nature” of the dismemberment. One detail that investigators emphasized was the supposed careful extraction of Joksimovic’s womb.

Reports indicate that concerns first emerged when she did not arrive to pick up one of her daughters from kindergarten. Her parents subsequently visited the family home in search of answers.

Authorities have stated that Rieben claimed he was unaware of his wife’s whereabouts, yet he allegedly invited Joksimovic’s father into the home, prepared a meal for him, and offered him a drink while they waited.

Later that evening, while Rieben was reportedly engaged in a phone call with Joksimovic’s mother, her father began searching the basement. There, he supposedly found a black bin bag with blonde hair visible through it.

A close family friend later shared with the Daily Mail, “When he opened the black bin bag, he saw her severed head with the hair still attached.”

Reports indicate that Joksimovic’s father ran from the house screaming before a neighbor alerted the police. Rieben was apprehended at the scene.

The same family friend, whose statements have not been independently confirmed, claimed that Rieben later commented he had only been caught because Joksimovic’s parents stayed at the house longer than anticipated.

“If they had only stopped by briefly, they wouldn’t have discovered the remains,” he is said to have remarked.

As the investigation progressed, friends and acquaintances began to describe what they characterized as a deeply troubled relationship concealed behind carefully managed public appearances.

Just weeks prior to her death, Joksimovic had shared photos online from what seemed to be a romantic getaway with Rieben at a luxury hotel overlooking Lake Lucerne.

However, friends revealed that the truth behind closed doors was quite different.

“At first, she was genuinely in love, but I was taken aback when she started dating him since he really didn’t match her at all,” a friend shared with the Mirror.

“He seemed very introverted, overly critical, and at times, rather arrogant.”

The same friend claimed that Rieben often belittled Joksimovic. “He was quite derogatory towards her, using gestures, words, and even his tone. It felt like he wanted Kristina to vanish,” they mentioned.

Friends also stated that Joksimovic tried to salvage the relationship through couples therapy, but Rieben reportedly either left the sessions or completely refused to engage.

Reports indicate that police had been summoned previously after Joksimovic allegedly accused him of being “violent and threatening.”

Additionally, one friend claimed that Rieben “disdains femininity,” asserting that he opposed their daughters wearing what he deemed “feminine clothing.”

Before her passing, Kristina Joksimovic had established a thriving life both in the public eye and professionally. She was a finalist in the 2007 Miss Switzerland pageant and later became a runway coach while also starting her own business.

Friends and past coworkers recalled her as kind-hearted, driven, and profoundly committed to her children.

Currently, the couple’s daughters are said to be under the care of Joksimovic’s parents and sister, while custody battles are still in progress.

The trial is anticipated to be one of the most closely monitored criminal cases in Switzerland in recent years.

A prior effort by Rieben to gain release from custody was denied by Switzerland’s Federal Court. If found guilty of murder, he may face a significant prison term according to Swiss law.
