Cruising used to be thought of as something mainly older travelers enjoyed, yet it has grown into a vacation style that attracts people from every age group. Ships now offer everything from nightlife to full-time living arrangements.
Some travelers have even gone as far as selling their belongings to live on cruise ships permanently, while others book long trips because it saves them money. With so many people onboard, it is no wonder unusual little traditions and signals start to pop up.
When TikTok creator Dominique, known as @blogionistatravels, spotted pineapple decals placed upside down on a few doors, she felt curious enough to ask what they stood for. Her question ended up sparking a massive response online.
“When you’re on your first cruise and you see that everyone has these little cute pineapples on their door,” she said in her viral clip.
“Those people are swinging. I learned that at a young age from my first cruise,” one person wrote. “Omg I found out what they mean last cruise we went on. It means, drop-ins are most welcome…and bring friends.”
The explanation stunned plenty of viewers, especially those who had walked past the symbol before without realizing what they were seeing. A number of people joked that Dominique should “keep walking” if she spotted one again.
TikTok couple Belle and Jase shared that they have also come across the symbol while cruising, proving that it is more common than many travelers think.
Still, the pineapple seems to be an important part of the culture. Belle even wondered if the fruit’s connection to the lifestyle went beyond the symbol and into actual consumption, prompting more questions from viewers.
At this point, all anyone can do is speculate about how deep the symbolism goes. Yet one thing is clear: seeing an upside-down pineapple might mean you have crossed paths with swingers.
If you do, remember to be respectful. People use the symbol discreetly for a reason, and it is not an invitation to bother anyone.
