She Was Considered An ‘Ugly Duckling’ Growing Up But Today She’s A Beauty Icon

Long before she became a prominent global figure and a member of the British royal family, Meghan Markle was just a young girl in Los Angeles, seeking to find her place in the world.

Born to Doria Ragland, who is of Black descent, and Thomas Markle Sr., who is of white descent, Markle has candidly discussed the difficulties she encountered as a biracial child. Throughout various interviews, she has shared that there were times she felt trapped between different worlds, uncertain about how others viewed her identity.

Markle once referred to herself as a “latchkey kid,” frequently coming home to an empty house since both of her parents worked long hours. Her mother made a living as a makeup artist, while her father was involved in television production behind the scenes.

During those years, meals were often quick and simple, as she remembered, consisting of microwave dinners and fast food. Evenings sometimes included watching trivia shows like Jeopardy! while dining at a TV tray.

Not everyone shares Markle’s view of her early years. Her father has publicly challenged some elements of her childhood narratives, including her portrayal of growing up primarily on convenience foods. He has also mentioned that he regularly picked her up from school or arranged transportation when he was busy with work.

One experience that Markle claims influenced her childhood was the reactions she and her mother faced when they were out in public. Since many people assumed Markle was white, strangers sometimes questioned how she could have a dark-skinned mother. Ragland has shared instances of being mistaken for a nanny while out with her daughter.

Markle’s parents divorced when she was a child. For a number of years, she divided her time between both parents before ultimately living mostly with her father while her mother sought career opportunities elsewhere.

Ragland later relocated to a mostly Black community outside the San Fernando Valley. Even with the distance, she continued to be a significant influence in her daughter’s life. Ragland has mentioned a strong network of women who supported Markle as she was growing up, describing her daughter as kind, mature, and inherently friendly.

As a teenager, Markle has shared that she faced the same insecurities that many young people do, but she also felt the extra pressure of navigating life as someone who didn’t fit neatly into a single category.

She referred to herself as a self-identified “nerd,” pointing out that academics became a major part of her identity during her school years. At the age of just 11, Markle even penned letters challenging a television advertisement she felt perpetuated sexist stereotypes.

The family lived a modest lifestyle financially. Markle later remembered feeling thankful for simple outings, such as trips to the salad bar at Sizzler or dining at The Old Spaghetti Factory with her Girl Scouts troop.

After her father reportedly won a significant lottery prize, the family’s situation improved, which relatives claim helped support Markle’s education and training.

During her teenage years, Markle took on various jobs—from babysitting to selling donuts at a small stand named Little Orbit. Around this time, she also developed a passion for acting while spending time on the set of Married… with Children, where her father was a lighting director.

Her acting career eventually flourished when she secured the role of Rachel Zane on Suits, which brought her international fame.

In 2016, Markle met Prince Harry, the grandson of Queen Elizabeth II. The couple tied the knot in a highly publicized ceremony at Windsor Castle in 2018.

They subsequently welcomed two kids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

In the past few years, Markle has kept sharing personal details about her life, including the health issues she encountered after giving birth. In an episode of her podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder, she disclosed that she went through Postpartum Preeclampsia, calling it a terrifying and unforeseen medical emergency.

From humble origins in Los Angeles to worldwide recognition and royal existence, Markle’s narrative showcases a journey characterized by ambition, resilience, and the drive to establish her own identity.
