In 2013, the city of Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, England, was shaken by a string of disturbing killings that later became known as the ‘Peterborough ditch murders’. The name came from the tragic discovery of three victims who were each found abandoned in isolated roadside ditches outside the city limits.
The victims were Kevin Lee, a 48-year-old property developer and landlord, 31-year-old Polish national Lukasz Slaboszewski, and 56-year-old John Chapman. Each case carried the same signs of extreme violence, pointing investigators toward a single suspect.
The murders led to Dennehy receiving a whole life sentence, one of the rarest penalties handed down in the UK. She joined a small and notorious list of women who have received the same punishment, including infamous figures like Myra Hindley, Rosemary West, and more recently, neonatal nurse Lucy Letby.
Dennehy told authorities she would ‘never’ target women, especially mothers. She made it clear she only wanted to harm men, a detail that added yet another disturbing layer to her already chilling case.
“I want my fun. I need you to get my fun,” she said in one of her chilling statements to the same accomplice, giving a disturbing look into her thinking at the time.
Dennehy first met her victim Kevin Lee after she left prison and rented a low-cost room from him in 2012. Their connection quickly became complicated and dangerous.
Her first victim, Slaboszewski, believed she was romantically involved with him. She lured him to her home before stabbing him and disposing of his body in a garbage can. The calculated nature of the attack showed early signs of how cold her mindset had become.
According to psychiatric reports, she later admitted she killed him simply to ‘see if I was as cold as I thought I was’, revealing the deeply disturbing motivation behind her actions.
On the same day, she also killed Lee. She had promised him sexual favors, and when he arrived at her home, she stabbed him before dressing his body in a black sequin dress and leaving him posed in a ditch. The display was cruel, deliberate, and meant to shock.
Weeks later, the court heard that Dennehy wanted to kill again. She convinced her accomplice, Gary Stretch, to drive her out of the area. They then stabbed two men who were out walking their dogs, attacking them in a terrifying nine-minute spree and stealing one of the victims’ dogs before fleeing.
Stretch and two other accomplices were also sentenced, receiving penalties of 14 years and three years for their roles in the attacks.
Justice Spencer determined that Dennehy suffered from paraphilic sadomasochism, a psychological condition in which a person gains sexual pleasure from causing pain or humiliation. This diagnosis helped explain the disturbing patterns seen throughout her crimes.
