At just 15 years old, the Swedish actor Björn Andrésen was cast in the 1971 film Death in Venice. Italian director Luchino Visconti chose him for the role, which was adapted from Thomas Mann’s novel.

In a press interview, Visconti referred to Andrésen as “the most beautiful boy in the world,” a phrase that followed him for the rest of his life. Unfortunately, it became a source of distress for Andrésen.

As he grew older, he reflected on how being labeled the most beautiful boy in the world, along with the challenging experience of working with director Luchino Visconti, influenced his entire existence.

“I felt like an exotic animal in a cage,” he shared with The Guardian in 2003. In 2021, he remarked that making the film “screwed up” his life significantly.

“Everything I ever do will be linked to that film. I mean, we’re still discussing it 50 years later,” Andrésen expressed.

Bjorn Andresen, known as “the most beautiful boy in the world,” has died at 70.

Andrésen maintained a successful acting career. Born in 1955 in Stockholm, Sweden, his life began with a profound tragedy as his mother took her own life when he was just 10 years old. He was brought up by his grandmother.

Filming Death In Venice catapulted Björn Andrésen to stardom. However, director Visconti behaved inappropriately. At the tender age of 16, Björn was taken to gay nightclubs by Visconti, which left him feeling “very uncomfortable.”

“I knew I couldn’t react. It would have been social suicide. But it was the first of many such encounters,” Andrésen once remarked.

The actor admitted that if the Italian director were still alive today, he would want him to “fck off,” as he “didn’t give a fck” about his feelings.

“I’ve never encountered so many fascists and jerks as I have in film and theatre. Luchino was the kind of cultural predator who would sacrifice anything or anyone for his art,” Andrésen added.

Successful career

Rather than pursuing a career in Hollywood, Björn Andrésen found fame in Japan. He became a model and a pop star, and in a 2003 interview with The Guardian, he described the “hysteria” surrounding him as akin to that of The Beatles.

Later in life, he transitioned into a pianist and a skilled musician. Nevertheless, Andrésen’s portrayal in Death in Venice continued to haunt him until the very end.
