Davon, 34, went to the dentist on December 29 last year for a standard exam. During that visit, he was told that his gums were severely inflamed and bleeding, which already suggested something was not right inside his mouth.
That same night, his partner Alicia Wilder said she could tell his condition was becoming serious. He started developing symptoms that felt similar to the flu, and even after being taken to urgent care, he did not get better. Instead, things continued to move in the wrong direction.
While he was unconscious, doctors had to make devastating decisions in order to stop the infection from spreading any further through his body. To save his life, they amputated his right leg, his left leg below the knee, his left forearm, and his right hand.
The scale of what happened was overwhelming, especially because it all followed what had seemed like an ordinary medical appointment. Within a very short span of time, Davon had gone from attending a dental check to fighting for survival in intensive care.
Alicia, a mother of two from Texas, said she remains grateful that Davon is still alive. She explained that she feels hopeful about his future because his body has continued responding to treatment, even after everything he has been through.
She also hopes that by sharing what happened, other people might recognize the warning signs of septic shock earlier and seek help before a situation becomes this severe. In her view, awareness matters, especially when symptoms begin to escalate quickly.
“In Davon’s case his gums were really inflamed when the dentist was in there poking in his mouth and it caused bleeding in his gums. The dentists didn’t say ‘maybe I shouldn’t go forwards with this entire exam even though his gums are severely inflamed and bleeding’.”
“Everyone has bacteria in their mouth but in Davon’s situation the bacteria entered into his mouth because there were multiple pathways created in his gums.”
She said he was shaking and shivering uncontrollably. He told her, “I don’t know what’s wrong with me, I’m so cold and I can’t stop shaking”, which only made the situation feel even more frightening as his symptoms kept piling up in a short amount of time.
Davon also began vomiting and had diarrhea. Once he was rushed to the hospital, doctors placed him on a ventilator and then put him into a coma so they could manage his condition as aggressively as possible.
He also developed a rare and life-threatening complication called purpura fulminans. Because of how severe the damage had become, doctors decided on January 23 that his right leg needed to be amputated in an effort to stop the source of the danger.
“When your muscle tissue dies it releases a toxin that can spread to the rest of your muscles. If you don’t stop the source then you’re going to die and go into septic shock again,” Alicia explained of what was happening to Davon.
“When they went necrotic I had spent time trying to massage his hands trying to create blood flow. Unfortunately that wasn’t working. His hands turned black and hard.”
“There was a time where they ended up trying to take some more of the dead tissue off of his right leg and that essentially stirred the pot and he went into a second round of septic shock.”
“Despite everything Davon has endured, he remains strong in ways that amaze me. Even in critical condition, even while he cannot speak, he is present and he communicates,” she said.
“He participates in therapy, even when it is incredibly hard and even if he needs breaks. He fights through nausea, unstable vitals, and intense pain every day.”
“Don’t be scared to go to the dentist, the dentist is important. When you go to the dentist, you should ask if your gums are inflamed or infected and is it truly safe to move forward with the periodontal exam.”
“I would also encourage everyone to fill out medical information correctly regardless if you don’t think it is connected. No amount of money will ever make anything better ever. But it can contribute to helping me with legal, housing, vehicles, and taking care of my girls.”
Her account also highlights how difficult recovery can be even after someone survives the most dangerous stage. Davon is now facing a long rehabilitation process, and that includes therapy, physical recovery, daily pain, and major life adjustments. The emotional toll on the family is also clear, especially as Alicia continues caring for him while also trying to support their children and manage the practical side of what comes next.
At the same time, Alicia has made it clear that she wants people to take away more than shock from Davon’s story. She wants others to ask better questions during medical appointments, fill out their health information carefully, and pay close attention when symptoms suddenly get worse. For her, sharing these details is not just about what happened to Davon, but about trying to prevent another family from facing the same kind of crisis.
