Parents Warn Others After Son, 8, Dies From Inhaling Helium From Birthday Balloon

Jamie and Carly Dunbar are speaking out after their young son Joshua died on his birthday following an accident involving a helium balloon.

For many people, helium balloons feel like a harmless part of a party. Some people even bite a small hole near the knot and breathe in the gas for a few seconds because it makes their voice sound high-pitched.

But Joshua’s parents want others to understand that the danger can be far more serious than many families realize. Reports of fatal incidents linked to helium have become a growing concern, especially when children are curious about the funny voice effect.

In Joshua’s case, the tragedy happened shortly after his eighth birthday celebrations.

His parents said he had only been alone with the helium balloon for ‘minutes’ before he was found ‘lifeless’ in his bedroom in the UK. The speed of what happened is part of why Jamie and Carly now want other parents to hear their warning.

On May 20, the couple appeared on This Morning to talk about Joshua and explain the danger they believe helium balloons can pose inside a family home.

Jamie and Carly said they had bought Joshua a foil balloon shaped like the number eight to mark his birthday.

After the family returned home, Joshua wanted some quiet time by himself. His parents said he took the balloon upstairs with him and went into his room.

What followed happened in a very short window of time. His mom had gone up for a ‘chat’ and his dad came in moments later, but by then the family’s day had turned into a nightmare.

“He wanted some quiet time in his room cause he liked quiet time, didn’t he? So he went up to his room,” Jamie explained, with Carly adding: “He took the balloon up to his room with him.”

Carly said she had spoken to Joshua and remembered him sitting calmly on his bed while watching TV with the balloon nearby.

“I told him his dad would be up, and we’re going to put all his presents away. And then his dad came up literally minutes later,” Carly shared on the show.

Why the warning matters

Helium balloons are often treated as simple birthday decorations, which is why Joshua’s death has shaken his parents so deeply. They had bought balloons for family celebrations before and had not known they could become dangerous in this way.

The risk is that helium can displace the oxygen a person needs to breathe. If someone inhales enough of it, especially from a balloon or enclosed space, the lack of oxygen can cause them to lose consciousness very quickly.

For parents, the warning is not about panic over every balloon. It is about knowing that children should not be left alone with helium balloons, especially foil balloons that may cover the face or be bitten open.

“And then [I came] up and found him. At first, I’d seen the balloon half deflated,” Jamie said. “It took me a split second to realize Joshua was lying down with the balloon over his head. So I had to get him off his bed and physically rip the balloon off him.”

The detail is devastating because Jamie said it took only a moment for him to realize what had happened. The balloon was partly deflated, and Joshua was lying down with it over his head.

He then had to pull his son from the bed and rip the balloon away, trying to act as fast as he could in a situation no parent could ever prepare for.

“We don’t know exactly how the balloon has managed to get over his head,” Carly revealed, ‘but from the manner where he was sitting in his room, he was nice and calm.’

Carly believes Joshua may have bitten the balloon open. She thinks that may have caused him to inhale the helium, which then replaced the oxygen in his lungs.

That theory is part of what makes the case so frightening for the family. They believe there may have been no loud warning sign or obvious struggle before Joshua lost consciousness.

“And then knocked him deeply unconscious, which then allowed the foil balloon to cover his head,” she added.

Carly also described the panic after Joshua was found. She said she screamed for neighbors to help as the couple tried to respond to the emergency unfolding in their home.

Paramedics arrived soon after and took over from Jamie to perform CPR. For families, it is another reminder that some household items can carry hidden health risks when children are left alone with them.

Despite everyone’s efforts, Joshua could not be revived.

Jamie and Carly are now trying to raise awareness so other families know the danger before something similar happens. The couple said: “But we just want to get it out there, the message, the awareness, even if that doesn’t happen, to make people aware that the dangers of them. Because we never knew. We’d always bought balloons for our other children’s birthdays before.”

Their message is painfully clear. What seemed like a normal birthday balloon became part of a tragic accident, and they want other parents to know the risk they say they never understood before losing Joshua.
