Madonna Names John F. Kennedy Jr. In Risqué Confession About Her Past

Madonna has never been shy about her private life, and her latest answer has put one famous name back in the spotlight. While promoting Confessions II, the pop icon named John F. Kennedy Jr. when asked about her most memorable bedroom partner, though she made clear there was one condition attached to her answer.

The ‘Vogue’ singer opened up during a new promotional push for the album, which shares a title with one of the most personal words in her career. Confessions II follows the theme of looking back, speaking plainly, and leaning into the kind of bold image that has kept Madonna at the center of celebrity conversation for decades.

For the campaign, she teamed up with Grindr and sat down with a group of well-known names, including designer Raul Lopez, dancer Ivy Mugler, and others. The setup gave her guests room to ask the kind of questions most interviewers might avoid, and Madonna did not seem too interested in giving safe answers.

Why the answer got so much attention

The moment spread because it brought together two very different public worlds: Madonna’s long history of provocative pop culture moments and the Kennedy family’s place in American public life. John F. Kennedy Jr. was not only the son of President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, but also one of the most watched public figures of his generation.

People reported that Madonna’s Grindr video featured names including Ivy Mugler, Raul Lopez, Jeremy O. Harris, Bob the Drag Queen, and Marcelo Gutierrez, with the singer answering questions about sex, dating, and her new album People. That wider setup helps explain why her JFK Jr. answer felt more like a classic Madonna reveal than a random throwaway comment.

The confession also connects to a long-running fascination with her dating history. Madonna has often been linked to high-profile artists, actors, athletes, and public figures, which is why a brief late-1980s connection with Kennedy Jr. still draws interest many years later.

“Who was your best d*** down?” one person asked, setting up the question that led to the Kennedy Jr. reveal. For the ‘Material Girl’, though, there was a boundary on who she was willing to name.

“I’m only going to name dead people,” the 67-year-old said, before naming the son of the 35th US president, John F. Kennedy Jr.

Kennedy Jr. died at the age of 38 in 1999. According to Britannica, the light aircraft he was piloting crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, on July 16, 1999, killing him, his wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and her sister Lauren Bessette.

Designer Lopez appeared to know exactly why the answer would cause a reaction. He responded: “Everyone says his d*** was crazy and he was a good f***.”

The comment suggested Madonna was not the only person who had heard stories about Kennedy Jr.’s reputation. It also made the moment feel less like a simple name-drop and more like one of those celebrity stories people have been whispering about for years.

“You’re the third person I’ve heard say that!”

“Mmm hmm,” Madonna confirmed.

Madonna and Kennedy Jr. dated only briefly in the late 1980s, but their connection has kept resurfacing because of how famous they both were at the time. Kennedy Jr. was reportedly ‘totally in awe’ of Madonna, who was already one of the biggest stars in the world and at the height of her fame.

At that point in his life, Kennedy Jr. was working as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan. That made his world very different from Madonna’s, even though both were already used to public attention.

Christopher Anderson, author of The Day John Died, wrote in his biography: “For his part, John, who was not above being star struck, was dazzled by the notion of dating Madonna.”

“The most glamorous, celebrated, and, by all accounts, exciting woman of her generation.”

One of Madonna’s friends, dancer Erika Belle, also spoke to Anderson about the connection between the two. Belle said you could ‘see it in his eyes that first time they met’, suggesting Kennedy Jr.’s interest was clear from the beginning.

That detail adds to the picture of a short but intense flirtation. It was not presented as a long romance, but the people around them seemed to remember the spark between them.

The spark did not turn into anything lasting. Madonna and Kennedy Jr. eventually went their separate ways, and both later built relationships with other partners.

In JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography by RoseMarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil, one of Kennedy Jr.’s close friends described the Madonna connection in plain terms, saying that ‘Madonna was totally a fling’.

“It was all about physical attraction, it wasn’t going to be anything beyond that,” they added.

The same unnamed friend said in the book that when the pair became intimate, they did not use protection. That detail carried extra weight because the fling happened in the 1980s, during the AIDS epidemic.

Because of that, the friend claimed Madonna did not want to take unnecessary risks. The pair were still said to have found other ways to enjoy themselves, keeping the connection physical while avoiding what she saw as a possible danger.

There was also another issue hanging over the fling. Madonna was still technically married to I Am Sam actor Sean Penn at the time, and that reportedly did not sit well with former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who was Kennedy Jr.’s mother.

Kennedy Jr. later married Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy in 1996. Madonna went on to marry Guy Ritchie in 2000, though their marriage ended in divorce in 2008.

The ‘Like a Prayer’ singer is now in a relationship with 30-year-old soccer player Akeem Morris. The pair went public midway through 2024, adding another chapter to a love life that has often been followed almost as closely as her music.

As for the Kennedy Jr. confession, it fits the same pattern Madonna has followed for years: saying the thing people do not expect, then letting everyone else react to it.
