Vanilla Ice crashes deputy’s 30-year celebration in the best way

A Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy’s compassion during a traffic stop involving a young man with autism led to a surprise visit from Vanilla Ice.

A Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy thought she was attending a routine recognition ceremony when she found herself face to face with her favorite celebrity.

Deputy Tina Izzarone was being honored with a commemorative recognition award while also celebrating her 30 years of service to the community when Rob Van Winkle, better known as Vanilla Ice, walked into the room.

WPBF 25 News captured the moment as Izzarone stood in shock during the surprise visit.

A few months before the surprise, Izzarone had responded to a traffic stop involving a woman and her adult son, Raffie, who is diagnosed with autism. According to the family, the deputy’s patience and compassion during that encounter left a lasting impression.

“I noticed immediately of his specialness, and I made him feel really at ease knowing that his mother was not in trouble. But I did run her ticket,” said Izzarone.

After that initial meeting, Raffie unexpectedly ran into the deputy again, and they formed a connection. During those conversations, Izzarone shared a personal wish. She told Raffie’s mother, Sandy, that she had always wanted to meet Vanilla Ice, with whom she also shares a birthday.

Sandy helped relay the story, eventually leading to the surprise arrangement.

“Sandy filled me in, gave me all the dirt on her, which was all good, and says that the whole force just loves her,” said Van Winkle.

When he finally walked in, Izzarone was visibly stunned.

Van Winkle said the moment reflected a larger message about connection and community.

“Friendships can come from anywhere. That’s why I always say shake a hand and make a friend because you can do it anywhere at any time. That’s what’s going on here, and now they’ve got a friendship, and it’s cute. Now, I’m involved too,” he said.

A spokesperson for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said the friendship formed between Raffie and Izzarone highlights the agency’s ongoing commitment to building trust and meaningful relationships within the autism community.

The event ended as a celebration not only of Izzarone’s 30 years of service but also of an unexpected moment of connection that brought together law enforcement, a local family and a celebrity guest.
