On longer flights, those little tables can feel pretty useful. People use them for meals, laptops, phones, tablets, snacks, and whatever else helps pass the time while they are stuck in the air.
But one flight attendant has now given passengers a pretty gross reason to stop treating those tray tables like clean dinner plates. According to her TikTok warning, they may be one of the last places you want to put your food directly.
According to Cher, a Spirit Airlines flight attendant who says she has worked in the industry for seven years, the answer is bad enough that she refuses to eat off one.
She shared the warning online as part of a wider list of things she avoids while flying, and her comments have left a lot of travelers reaching for disinfectant wipes before their next trip.
Then she explained why the thought bothers her so much, saying: “Do y’all know how many people rub their toes on there? Do you know how many dirty diapers get changed and they set it on they tray table while they wait for us?” Honestly, that is enough to ruin the in-flight snack cart for anyone.
She added that while passengers are not supposed to use tray tables that way, it still happens often. That means the surface in front of you may have seen a lot more than a soda can and a packet of pretzels.
Suddenly, Naomi Campbell’s famous habit of thoroughly wiping down her airplane seat area feels a lot less dramatic. One commenter clearly agreed, writing: “I wipe it down with disinfectant wipes.”
Another person seemed shaken by the warning and replied: “OMG. I already am a flight germaphobe and now this!”
She also warned passengers not to walk barefoot through the cabin. Some people in the comments could not believe anyone would do that in the first place, but according to her, it happens.
Her reasoning was not exactly comforting. Cher said she has seen people throw up on the carpet, and while crew members do what they can to clean it, she claimed it does not get cleaned “that well” and the carpet is not replaced every time. So yes, socks and shoes suddenly feel less optional.
Cher advised passengers not to head to the bathroom while flight attendants are in the middle of service. This time, the issue was not hygiene. It was about getting trapped between carts with nowhere comfortable to stand.
“If you get stuck between the carts, it sucks and you’re in the most uncomfortable position,” she said. “Just wait until they’re done with service or go before they start,” she recommended. After all of that, packing disinfectant wipes may be the real travel essential.
Even when crews clean between flights, they often have limited time to turn the plane around before the next group boards. That quick reset may not be enough to make every surface feel spotless.
For travelers, the simple fix is to wipe down the tray table, armrests, seatbelt buckle, and screen area before settling in. It only takes a minute, and after Cher’s warning, it may make that in-flight snack feel a little less risky.
Passengers may not be able to control every part of the flight experience, from delays to cramped seats, but basic cabin hygiene is one area where a little caution can go a long way.
So the next time that tray table comes down, maybe do not treat it like a plate. Give it a wipe first, keep food on a wrapper or napkin, and save yourself from thinking too hard about where it may have been.
