While many admired the overall ensemble, others zeroed in on her noticeably slender physique, particularly her arms.
“That’s not toned. That’s absolutely disgusting. She resembles a skeleton,” one individual commented.

The criticism grew stronger after a New York Post article labeled Demi Moore’s arms as ‘toned,’ which many users claimed was misleading and potentially damaging.

Experts emphasize that genuine muscle definition usually showcases visible structure in areas such as the shoulders, biceps, and triceps — rather than just thinness or prominent bones.
As explained by Melody D., a Fitness Specialist & Instructor at Obé Fitness, “Muscle tone is the capacity of your muscles to generate tension and force even when at rest. It gives your body structure and supports your posture, and it relates entirely to your muscles’ potential capabilities rather than their aesthetic appearance or composition.”

Fitness professionals indicate that losing weight quickly or drastically without incorporating strength training can lead to a decrease in both body fat and muscle mass simultaneously, often resulting in a more angular or fragile look instead of a clear muscular definition.
Mary Thoman, an exercise physiologist at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, mentioned, “When individuals refer to ‘toning,’ it typically implies enhancing muscular endurance… It’s important to remember that having some fat on our bodies is essential for good health, especially for women.”
Gunnar Paterson, a celebrity trainer, also pointed out that the term “toned” is frequently used in Hollywood as a gentler way to describe “muscular.”
“I don’t have women coming in saying ‘I want big arms.’ It’s ‘I want more definition in my arms,’” he shared with TIME. “The common goal among the women who visit my gym has always been a**, abs, arms. Nowadays, it’s all about the arms.”
Plastic surgeons Dr. Lee Thornton and Dr. Mark Elliott from Meridian Plastic Surgery have stressed that achieving noticeable arm definition typically results from resistance training, proper hydration, and overall body composition rather than isolating one specific area.
They clarified that “lifting weights,” performing “bodyweight exercises,” and “staying well-hydrated” all contribute to muscle definition and effective weight management. The surgeons also pointed out that “it’s nearly impossible to target specific areas on your body for fat loss. The most effective way to shape your arms is to concentrate on overall weight loss.”
