Autism NEPA Funding Supports Doctoral Capstone Projects, Community Programming, and Student Learning Opportunities

DALLAS, Pa. — Misericordia University occupational therapy faculty members Dr. Lori Charney and Dr. Orley Templeton have received a $5,000 grant from Autism NEPA to support three community-based programs.

The grant will fund two doctoral capstone projects and a community-based OT handwriting program that will serve local participants while providing learning opportunities for occupational therapy students.

The OT doctoral capstone projects include an adaptive art program and a transition program at Wilkes-Barre Area Middle School. The OT handwriting clinic will be offered on Misericordia University’s campus to children in need of handwriting intervention within the community and incorporated into student learning experiences within the occupational therapy program.

According to the grant award, the funding is intended to support initiatives that benefit individuals with autism and their families in the region while expanding educational opportunities for occupational therapy students.

The projects are expected to be implemented during the upcoming academic year.
