Thai princess dies aged 47 after nearly four years in coma

Thailand is in mourning as Princess Bajrakitiyabha, the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, has passed away at the age of 47. She died after a prolonged illness, spending the last four years in a coma.

The royal palace has confirmed that the beloved princess, affectionately known as “Princess Bha,” passed away on Thursday evening in a hospital in Bangkok. She had been in a coma for nearly four years after suffering a collapse in December 2022 due to a serious heart condition.

Her health declined over time due to various severe complications, including infections, abdominal inflammation, irregular heartbeat, and blood clotting issues.

Born in 1978, Princess Bajrakitiyabha was seen as one of the most accomplished members of the Thai Royal Family. She received a law education, including studies in the United States, and established a respected career as a diplomat, lawyer, and advocate for women’s rights in prisons.

The princess also held several prominent international positions, including work with the United Nations. Unfortunately, her lengthy illness kept her away from the public for years, with few updates from the royal household during her treatment.
