Claudia Cardinale: See the Italian Film Legend at 86

Discovered after being crowned the Most Beautiful Italian Girl in Tunisia, Claudia Cardinale seemed destined only for glamour. Yet behind the luminous roles in Rocco and His Brothers, 8½, The Leopard, The Pink Panther, and Once Upon a Time in the West, she carried the trauma of a violent assault at 18 and a secret pregnancy she protected fiercely as her fame exploded.

Bound for years to producer Franco Cristaldi, who dictated her contracts, image, and even her movements, she endured depression and control before finally breaking free in 1975. Unlike many contemporaries, she refused to trade dignity for exposure, turning down nude scenes and resisting Hollywood’s demands in favor of artistic and moral independence. Later, with director Pasquale Squitieri and her two children, she rebuilt a life on her own terms. At 86, as a UNESCO goodwill ambassador, she embodies survival, courage, and hard‑won freedom.
