Rachel Ward rose to fame after her role as Maggie Cleary in The Thorn Birds. Throughout her career, she has often been evaluated based on her appearance, and now she has chosen to respond to that. In a recent interview, Ward appeared without makeup, proudly showcasing her aging features. And we think it’s fantastic!

Her role in The Thorn Birds catapulted Rachel Ward into the limelight of Hollywood. Although she has stepped back from the public eye in recent years, she is now drawing attention for reasons beyond her acting.

In a recent makeup-free interview with ABC News, she candidly discussed the harsh criticism she has received regarding her looks and her decision to embrace her natural aging features in a society that frequently pressures women to conform to unrealistic standards.

“I sparked a discussion that I believe many have found challenging,” she shared in a clip that was later posted on Instagram. “Women were not permitted to have wrinkles or gray hair. Why do we feel the need to pretend we’re still 40 when we’re actually 68?”

Her refreshing honesty didn’t end there. Commenting on the unexpected online attention her natural appearance has attracted, she humorously remarked: “The worse I looked, the more followers I gained… Isn’t it ironic that my decision to go gray has brought me more attention than if I had taken my top off?”

Rachel Ward stands up to online trolls following criticism of her views on natural aging.

Although her genuine approach has garnered her numerous fans, it has also attracted a surge of online negativity. After posting a video about her new project, FarmThru — a transition from her previous high-profile life to a more serene existence on a farm — she reported receiving a barrage of comments that focused on her looks instead of her endeavors.

In a subsequent Instagram video, she tackled the criticism directly with her characteristic straightforwardness and poise.

“To those who reacted to the fuss regarding the trolls attacking my looks, I’ve made an effort to improve a bit today. I ran my fingers through my hair, and so on,” she stated. “But anyway, I just want to remind you all, there’s no need to fear aging.”

Her message is unmistakable: aging is not something to be ashamed of — it’s something to embrace. For her, each wrinkle and gray hair tells a story she is determined to keep.
