On the evening of April 6, Armando Vidal entered Sandy’s Liquor in San Luis Obispo with only $25 in his pocket. He chose two Triple Red 777 scratch tickets priced at $10 each, along with a few less expensive ones.

This was a gamble, especially since the California Lottery states that the odds of winning the top $1 million prize are approximately 1 in 2.047 million. Even the chances of winning a smaller prize are about 1 in 2.92. However, for Vidal, that daring choice was about to transform his life.

Wilson Samaan, the store manager at Sandy’s Liquor, vividly remembers the moment. Vidal scratched one of the tickets right there and won $200, with the cashier promptly handing him the cash.

Vidal didn’t scratch the second Triple Red 777 until the following morning when he returned to the store, where Samaan was again behind the counter.

Vidal looked up and exclaimed, “Oh my God, come take a look at this. Is that real?”

Samaan took the ticket and scanned it, revealing something that astonished them both.

Samaan recounted the moment with enthusiasm. “Bro, you hit the jackpot,” he said as they exchanged high-fives in disbelief.

Initially, Vidal believed he had won $100,000, which was already a significant amount. But then Samaan pointed out an additional zero on the printout.

This meant that Vidal had actually won $1 million. It was genuine. His entire life had changed in just one morning.

Sandy’s Liquor proudly celebrated their customer’s victory with an Instagram post on April 11, stating: “Big congrats to our loyal customer on his $1 million jackpot winning scratch ticket at Sandy’s.”

Vidal is a familiar face in San Luis Obispo. Despite being homeless for several years, he is a well-respected member of the community.

Wilson Samaan mentioned that they had developed a friendship over time. Samaan even once offered Vidal a job at the store, but due to a chronic knee issue, Vidal had to decline.

Even though he couldn’t work, Samaan relied on Vidal to oversee the store on numerous occasions while he took care of other duties.

“He’s a good, trustworthy person,” Samaan expressed to the LA Times, speaking fondly of his long-time customer.

Upon realizing the size of the prize, Vidal considered sending the ticket to the California Lottery office by mail.

Samaan, however, wanted to ensure it was safe. He offered to personally drive Vidal to the lottery office in Fresno, guaranteeing the winning ticket would arrive securely.

“I was so thrilled – even more than he was,” Samaan remarked, adding, “He’s a good person, he deserves every penny… I was really happy it happened to someone who truly deserved it, and he really needed it.”

Another local business owner, Adam Kemp from Thrifty Beaches in downtown San Luis Obispo, also spread the joyful news on social media.

Kemp shared a video of Vidal with the winning ticket and mentioned how he and his wife had been living on the streets for quite some time.

He captioned the video: “Too good not to share. This is unbelievable. This man and his wife have been on the streets for a long time. They have always been kind to me and Maria. I’m so thrilled for both of them! You never know when it’s your turn to win big in life!”

In the video, Kemp states, “My friend here just won $1 million in the lottery in SLO.”

Vidal beams and responds, “I won $1 million here in SLO at Sandy’s Liquor store. I just can’t wait to get off the streets.”

Now that he’s a millionaire, Vidal has specific plans for his winnings. He told Samaan he intends to purchase a small home and a car, something he and his wife have long dreamed of.

But that’s not all. Vidal also aims to invest the remaining money or use it to start a business.

“He mentioned he’s not going to squander the second chance he’s been given,” Samaan said.

For Vidal, this isn’t merely about money. It represents security, dignity, and hope for a brighter future.

California’s housing crisis has left many people struggling to find a place they can truly call home. Vidal’s journey serves as a reminder that even in the most challenging circumstances, life can take a surprising turn for the better.

For one individual in San Luis Obispo, the journey from mere survival to a sense of stability now seems achievable. His experience provides more than just a stroke of luck; it brings hope to anyone enduring tough times without losing their resolve.

With the community rallying behind him, Vidal exemplifies the idea that a single good day can transform everything.

If this story resonates with you, think about sharing it. You never know who might need a reminder that it’s never too late to start anew.
