Doctors emphasize that even if symptoms temporarily improve, the syndrome often recurs if cannabis use persists. The only effective long-term remedy is to stop using it completely.
“Since the syndrome occurs sporadically, some cannabis users mistakenly believe that a recent episode was not connected and continue their usage — only to find themselves severely ill again,” says Dr. Beatriz Carlini, a research associate professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
Research backs up these worries. A study from George Washington University, which surveyed over 1,000 individuals diagnosed with CHS, revealed a strong link between early, extended cannabis use and frequent emergency room visits due to scromiting episodes.
Worryingly, cases among adolescents in the US skyrocketed more than tenfold from 2016 to 2023. The most significant increases were noted in states where recreational cannabis remains illegal. Although the overall incidence of CHS was higher in states where cannabis is legal, younger populations saw sharper increases in areas where it is still banned — a trend that raises additional public health concerns.
As cannabis regulations continue to change, medical professionals stress the importance of being aware of conditions like CHS. While the legal landscape may be shifting, the biological dangers are still very much present.
Joan shared that her fitness routine has evolved over the years, particularly after dealing with a trapped nerve that left her nearly incapacitated for almost two months. Thanks to physiotherapy, she was able to recover, and now she prioritizes consistent movement rather than intense workouts.
She also mentioned her belief in doing things ‘little and often,’ regularly swims, and once disclosed during an appearance on BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour, ‘I do the splits very easily.’
Before she adjusted her routine, Joan noted that she used to stay active in a very different manner. ‘From the time I was 16, I went to discotheques, dance halls, and nightclubs and danced the night away for hours and hours,’ she told Platinum magazine.
In addition to exercise, Joan has candidly discussed the habits she swears by for health, skincare, and aging gracefully. She has consistently emphasized that discipline is more important than costly treatments or cosmetic procedures.
‘I eat an avocado every day,’ she told The Express, adding that she also takes supplements like Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Omega oils.
At the same time, she has never subscribed to strict dieting. ‘I don’t stuff myself with food. I only eat half of what’s on my plate, and I won’t deprive myself. I’ll drink wine, have dessert, eat toast and have coffee with sugar,’ Joan previously stated.
She has also addressed years of speculation regarding cosmetic enhancements. Writing for The Telegraph, Joan remarked, ‘A lot of people think I’ve had a ton of work done. To set the record straight: I have not.’
She later added, ‘I haven’t had Botox, I haven’t had any tweakments, I haven’t had fat injections.’ Instead, Joan attributes her youthful appearance to traditional skincare practices she learned from her mother. She has mentioned that she never goes to bed without removing her makeup and applying night cream, and she has always been diligent about sun protection.
‘I have always worn sun protection and have kept my face away from harmful rays since I was 20,’ she once explained.
Before significant events, she also employs a beauty tip she picked up from Marilyn Monroe’s makeup artist.

“Before major events and after flights, I prepare a bowl of ice and some cotton pads,” she revealed. “This helps to minimize puffiness and rejuvenate the eyes.”
As images from Cannes circulated online, social media was quickly filled with admiration for Joan’s look and presence.
One user commented, “Wow…. that’s what you call aging gracefully….you can truly recognize her….” while another remarked, “Pure old school Hollywood elegance.”
“Joan is breathtaking at 92, but the fact that she remains incredibly sharp, doing interviews and still acting is remarkable,” another individual noted.
“She looks AMAZING, definitely the best dressed!!! Go Joan!” another admirer expressed.
It seemed everyone agreed that the actress continues to embody her elegant and beautiful self, even at 92 years of age.
