Beware of the Portuguese Man-of-War Washed Ashore

A stunning purple creature known as the Portuguese man-of-war may end up on the beach, but it’s crucial to refrain from touching it—and definitely don’t attempt to lick it! An influencer once made the error of licking these venomous “adorable” creatures, leading to serious repercussions.

As captivating as the purple and blue shades of the Portuguese man-of-war are, these creatures represent a considerable risk to human health. It resembles a floating bubble adorned with blue or purple tones and long, dark purple tentacles hanging below it.

These tentacles are the source of the danger. They contain venom that can inflict a painful and potentially harmful sting. Even if these creatures wash up on the beach and seem lifeless, steer clear of them, as their venomous sting can remain potent for days afterward.

A sting from this seemingly harmless creature can lead to heart problems, fever, shock, painful red welts, trouble breathing, paralysis, and in rare instances, death. If you happen to get stung by a Portuguese man-of-war, resist the temptation to urinate on it! Instead, seek immediate professional medical assistance.
